Erica Blumenstock and Debra Penrod Awarded Nurse Educator Fellowships
Erica Blumenstock and Debra Penrod, both assistant professors of nursing in the School of Health Sciences, have each been awarded nurse educator fellowships by the Illinois Board of Higher Education for 2024. They were among 76 nurse educators statewide to be chosen to receive the $10,000 fellowships for professional and instructional development and continuing education to enhance their teaching and research.

SIU’s Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders changes lives and communities
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Colleen, a Southern Illinois mother, knew something about her adorable son George was a little different by the time he was about 9 months old. Around his 1st birthday, George’s early interventionist suggested the boy might have autism. The possibility brought many fears and questions. George’s nurse practitioner suggested they check out Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders, and Colleen said it has been a life-changing decision for the family.

SIU program opens up firefighting career options
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Badd Axe Ladies firefighter training program is opening up new career options for young women. “When I introduce my students to these careers, it’s not that they aren’t aware of it — it is that they don’t think of it as a career field, until I introduce it that way,” said Jenna Jamieson, the Southern Illinois University undergraduate public health program director and instructor.

Saluki Pride: Kelli Whittington receives Emerging Leader Award
Kelli Whittington, assistant professor and Bachelor of Science in Nursing program director, has spent decades in the nursing profession, working in ICU, oncology, managing and administration since 1992. Soon thereafter, she became involved in nursing education and has taught nurses at all academic levels, preparing them for positions ranging from certified nurse assistants to doctoral registered nurses.

SIU Aviation students receive scholarships from The Boeing Company
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Fifteen students in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s nationally recognized School of Aviation recently received scholarships from Boeing to enhance their education. This is the second consecutive year Boeing has provided $50,000 to the School of Aviation for scholarships and to fund activities of aviation-related registered student organizations and outreach events, such as the fourth annual diversity luncheon on April 12 at the Glenn Poshard Transportation Education Center.

SIU Carbondale School of Aviation names new director
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Chien-tsung Lu, an associate professor in the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University, will be the new director in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s School of Aviation. The appointment is effective July 1.

Able Flight Strengthens Collegiate Aviation Presence Through SIU Carbondale Partnership
The Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale School of Aviation has partnered with Able Flight to provide specialized flight training led by SIU Aviation instructors beginning in May. Founded in 2006, Able Flight’s mission is to “provide people with disabilities a unique way to challenge themselves through flight and aviation career training, and by doing so, to gain greater self-confidence and self-reliance.”

Combining the training experience of a major university flight school, and the unique mission of an aviation nonprofit for people with physical disabilities, Able Flight and Southern Illinois University Carbondale will partner on a joint flight training project beginning this year.
